Federal prosecutors in New York had flagged the image after receiving requests from victims and their lawyers, prompting what officials called a precautionary step.
The short-lived removal led to pushback from Democrats who accused the Justice Department of hiding information tied to Trump. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries demanded a full investigation into why certain files were missing or delayed. Reports also indicated that up to 16 photographs were removed during the review, raising further questions about transparency, although Justice Department officials said all actions were driven by victim-protection requests.
The controversy surfaced only days after the Justice Department released thousands of pages of documents linked to Epstein, who died in 2019 while facing federal sex trafficking charges. Critics from both parties questioned the volume of redactions and the absence of key records, such as interviews and internal legal memos. According to federal officials, hundreds of thousands of pages remain under evaluation, including court records, photos, and investigative material. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that more than 200 lawyers are involved in reviewing the remaining files, and the department is prioritising protection of survivors while preparing further releases. Trump has denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein and appears only sparingly across the published documents. The Justice Department reaffirmed that restored and future documents will be posted once privacy checks are complete.
