Khamenei burial draws huge crowds in Mashhad

Khamenei burial concludes days of mourning

Khamenei burial ceremonies ended on Thursday, July 9, as Iran laid late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to rest at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of the holiest sites in Shiite Islam. The burial followed six days of funeral processions across Iran and Iraq, with authorities and state-linked outlets describing massive crowds throughout the mourning period. The final procession in Mashhad drew intense attention because it marked the formal end of public funeral rites after Khamenei’s killing in US strikes earlier this year.

Mashhad procession delayed by crowds

The procession in Mashhad was delayed for several hours as mourners packed roads leading to the Imam Reza Shrine. Iranian state-linked reporting said the vehicle carrying Khamenei’s coffin moved slowly through dense crowds, while many mourners carried crimson flags and chanted religious slogans. Videos shared from the scene appeared to show officials later moving the casket by helicopter because of the large number of people gathered near the shrine.

The Imam Reza Shrine became the centre of the final farewell, with mourners travelling from different parts of Iran to attend the burial. Red flags, often associated in Iranian religious-political symbolism with martyrdom and calls for revenge, were visible in the crowd. The chants and banners reflected the emotional and political mood surrounding the funeral, which unfolded during a period of renewed tension between Tehran and Washington.

Foreign delegations attend memorials

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said representatives from more than 70 countries attended memorial ceremonies for Khamenei, presenting the turnout as a sign of Iran’s diplomatic relationships. His remarks came as Tehran sought to frame the funeral not only as a national mourning event, but also as a moment of international recognition.

Anti-US slogans raise tensions

Videos and reports from the procession showed sections of the crowd chanting threats against US President Donald Trump and carrying banners calling for retaliation. Those slogans underline how Khamenei’s death continues to shape Iran’s domestic politics and its confrontation with the United States. The funeral closed a major chapter of mourning, but it did not reduce the wider regional pressure surrounding Iran, US strikes, and calls for revenge.
