As the calendar turns to a new year, New Year’s Day remains a federal holiday across the United States, bringing widespread closures for government offices, schools, banks and financial markets. At the same time, many major retailers and grocery chains plan to welcome customers on January 1, 2026, often with adjusted hours and post-holiday discounts aimed at clearing older inventory. Shoppers and consumers are encouraged to confirm local schedules in advance, as operating hours can vary by region and by store.
Government operations will largely pause for the holiday. Federal, state and local government offices are closed on New Year’s Day, including post offices, courts and public schools. Regular operations are expected to resume the following business day. Residents who rely on in-person government services should plan accordingly, as most facilities will not reopen until Friday.
Banks and financial markets will also observe the holiday. U.S. stock exchanges are closed on Thursday, January 1, and will reopen on Friday. Most banks across the country are not operating on New Year’s Day, though customers may still have access to ATMs, mobile banking and online services. Any time-sensitive financial transactions should be scheduled with the closure in mind.
Package delivery services will be limited. Standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services are suspended for New Year’s Day. However, some critical or expedited services may be available at select locations. Customers with urgent shipping needs are advised to check directly with their local service centers to confirm availability and holiday schedules.
Retail stores, however, will largely remain accessible. Walmart plans to stay open on New Year’s Day, though individual locations may operate under modified hours. Target, Macy’s and Kohl’s are also open, with similar adjustments depending on location. Drugstore chains such as CVS and Walgreens will operate on the holiday as well, but pharmacy hours may differ from standard store hours. Customers are encouraged to verify both retail and pharmacy schedules before visiting.
Grocery shopping will be possible in most areas, as many national grocery chains intend to remain open. Stores such as Albertsons, Whole Foods, Kroger and Aldi are generally open on New Year’s Day, though hours may be reduced. In-store pharmacies at these locations are often closed for the holiday. Two major grocery chains, Trader Joe’s and Costco, are exceptions and will be closed nationwide on New Year’s Day.
With schedules varying across industries and locations, consumers planning errands, shopping trips or deliveries on January 1 should take time to review local store websites or contact locations directly. While New Year’s Day brings widespread closures, many essential services and retailers remain available, allowing Americans to begin 2026 with both convenience and caution.
