Israeli Army Reviews Fatal West Bank Incident

Infant Killed Near Hebron

A seven-month-old Palestinian infant was killed and his parents were wounded after Israeli soldiers opened fire on a vehicle near Hebron in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The ministry identified the child as Sam Fahd Abu Haikal and said the shooting took place in the Tel Rumeida area, south of Hebron. His parents were also injured in the incident and received medical treatment. The shooting has drawn renewed attention to civilian safety in the West Bank, where violence has intensified since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.

Israeli Military Says Vehicle Was Seen As Threat

The Israeli military acknowledged that troops fired at the vehicle during operational activity in the Hebron area. In its statement, the military said soldiers believed the car was accelerating toward them and that one soldier responded with single shots. The military later said an initial inquiry found that those injured were uninvolved civilians and added that the incident was under review by the relevant authorities. It also expressed sorrow for harm caused to people not involved in hostile activity.

West Bank Violence Remains High

The incident comes amid continuing unrest across the occupied West Bank and Gaza. Palestinian authorities say more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the war began after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel says about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage in that attack. In Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry says more than 70,600 people have been killed during Israeli military operations since the start of the war. These figures remain central to international concern over civilian harm, accountability and the humanitarian cost of the conflict.

Civilian Harm Faces Renewed Scrutiny

The death of Sam Fahd Abu Haikal adds to growing pressure on Israeli authorities to explain how civilians, including children, continue to be harmed during military operations. While the Israeli military has described the Hebron shooting as a case under investigation, Palestinian officials have framed it as another example of excessive force in the occupied territory. For international audiences, the case underscores the fragile security environment in the West Bank and the urgent need for transparent reviews when civilians are killed or injured.
