California June 2026 Primary: What Voters Need to Know

California voters will cast ballots in the June 2, 2026 primary, choosing candidates for governor and deciding local Bay Area races and ballot measures. The election includes a crowded race to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, making early preparation essential.

Key Voting Dates

Counties must begin mailing vote-by-mail ballots by May 4, while ballot drop boxes and drop-off locations open May 5. The last day to register to vote is May 18.

Early in-person voting begins May 23 in Voter’s Choice Act counties including Alameda, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Sonoma. On June 2, polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mail ballots can still be counted if received by county officials by June 9.

Governor Race and Bay Area Ballot Measures

The governor’s race has drawn a large field, with 61 candidates listed on the ballot. The primary will determine which two candidates advance to November, regardless of party.

Bay Area voters will also face local candidates and ballot measures that could affect taxes, services, housing, schools and public safety. Voters can use their address to see only the races and measures on their own ballot, helping avoid confusion before Election Day.
