Met Gala Ban: Why Donald Trump Remains the Biggest Name Left Out
Donald Trump remains the only person publicly confirmed as banned from the Met Gala, after Anna Wintour said in 2017 that he would not be invited back.
The Met Gala, held every first Monday in May at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, is still fashion’s most powerful red carpet. But behind the glamour, the guest list has become a story of bans, boycotts and celebrity backlash.
Why Celebrities Are Skipping the Met Gala
Some stars are not banned — they simply want no part of it. Jack Schlossberg, grandson of John F. Kennedy, called for a Met Gala boycott in 2025, saying the moment felt wrong given global and domestic tensions.
Others have criticized the event’s culture. Tina Fey once dismissed it as a “jerk parade,” while Zayn Malik said the gala felt too self-indulgent. Amy Schumer also questioned the forced social atmosphere, though she later returned.
Who Is Really Banned — And Who Walked Away?
Officials have only clearly linked Trump to a public Met Gala ban. Other absences appear more complicated. Lili Reinhart suggested she may not be welcomed back after criticizing body-image pressure around celebrity fashion. Demi Lovato said a past gala experience was deeply uncomfortable, before later returning. Tim Gunn has also said he was effectively excluded after tension with Wintour.
The result is clear: the Met Gala remains a cultural spectacle, but its exclusivity now fuels as much debate as its fashion.
