A 26-year-old worker was killed and seven others suffered severe burn injuries after a boiler exploded at a private steel melting unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district early on Tuesday, July 14.

The accident occurred at the factory inside the SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Gummidipoondi. The deceased was identified as Ravi Ranjan, a migrant worker from Bihar. Seven other workers from northern Indian states were injured in the explosion.

Initial reports described the equipment involved as a furnace boiler used in the factory’s metal-melting operations. The explosion triggered a large fire inside the industrial unit and exposed workers in the affected section to intense heat and flames.

Gummidipoondi boiler blast leaves workers with severe burns

Fire and rescue personnel rushed to the factory after receiving information about the explosion. Firefighters brought the blaze under control and assisted in moving the injured workers away from the damaged section of the unit.

The seven injured workers were taken to hospitals for emergency treatment. Available reports said they had sustained severe burns, but authorities had not released a detailed medical update on each worker at the time of publication.

Ravi Ranjan died at the scene following the explosion. His body was recovered and sent for a post-mortem examination as part of the official procedure.

The force of the blast caused extensive damage around the boiler area and created panic among workers inside the factory. Emergency teams secured the affected section while police began collecting information from employees and factory representatives.

Police probe cause of Tamil Nadu factory blast

Gummidipoondi SIPCOT police opened an investigation into the incident. Officers are expected to examine the boiler, factory operating records and the sequence of events that led to the explosion.

The precise technical cause had not been officially established at the time of reporting. Authorities had also not announced whether a mechanical defect, operational error or another factor was responsible for the accident.

No official finding assigning responsibility to the factory management or its workers had been released. Claims about safety violations or poor maintenance should therefore be avoided until investigators or the relevant industrial safety authorities issue a formal assessment.

The accident has renewed attention on the dangers faced by workers in metal-melting facilities, where boilers, furnaces and molten materials operate at extremely high temperatures. Regular equipment inspections, protective gear, worker training and clear emergency procedures are essential in limiting the impact of fires and explosions.

Police are expected to release further information after completing their preliminary inquiry. The confirmed casualty count in the latest available reports was one worker killed and seven injured.
