Trump Says He'll Accept 2026 Midterm Results Only if 'Honest'

US President Donald Trump said on October 27 that he would respect the upcoming congressional midterm election results if they were honest. Speaking to reporters before travelling to Texas, Trump also discussed how his administration could work with Democrats if Republicans lost control of Congress after the November 3 vote.

Trump Accepts Midterm Results With Conditions

Trump made the statement during a brief exchange with reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

When asked whether he would accept the election outcome regardless of which party won, Trump replied, "I will, if they're honest elections."

He did not explain what standards he would use to determine whether the results were honest or identify specific evidence of fraud in the upcoming election.

His response comes amid continuing debate over election security and public confidence in the voting process.

Trump Discusses Presidential Veto Power

Reporters also asked Trump how he would cooperate with Democrats if they gained control of either chamber of Congress.

Trump said his administration could negotiate agreements, while emphasizing that he retained presidential veto authority.

A presidential veto allows the White House to reject legislation passed by Congress. Lawmakers can override a veto with a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

Divided government could make it harder for Trump to advance legislation, although bipartisan negotiations would remain possible.

US Midterm Elections November 2026

Americans will vote on November 3 to choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives and roughly one-third of the US Senate.

Republicans currently control both chambers, while Democrats are campaigning to regain congressional majorities.

The results will affect federal legislation, government spending and congressional oversight during the final two years of Trump's presidency.

A change in House control could increase scrutiny of administration policies, while Senate control also affects judicial and executive appointments.

Trump Campaigns for Ken Paxton in Texas

Trump travelled to Texas to support Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, who is competing against Democrat James Talarico.

Campaign appearances were scheduled in Corpus Christi and Lubbock as both parties focused attention on the closely contested Senate race.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also joined the Texas visit, which included an event highlighting Venezuelan crude oil arriving for processing at American refineries.

The trip combined election campaigning with the administration's broader economic and energy messaging.

Election Integrity and Congressional Control

Trump's remarks have renewed attention on election integrity and the peaceful acceptance of certified results.

The president has repeatedly questioned previous election outcomes, including the 2020 presidential election, which Joe Biden won.

Election administration remains primarily a state responsibility, with established procedures for counting ballots, resolving disputes and certifying results.

The November vote will determine Congress's composition, while legal safeguards and official certification procedures will govern the final election results.
