The 2026 US Midterm Election Results show Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress after flipping seven Republican-held Senate seats. Historic victories in Texas and Kansas, alongside gains in other states, have dealt President Donald Trump a major political setback.
Democrats Win Control of Congress
Democrats secured majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate following the November 3 elections, ending Republican control of Congress. Election projections indicated at least seven Democratic Senate gains, while several House contests remained under review.
The results give Democrats greater influence over federal legislation, government spending and congressional oversight. The shift also creates challenges for President Donald Trump as he enters the final two years of his presidency.
Texas and Kansas Senate Election Results
Texas delivered one of the election's biggest surprises. Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, securing the state's first Democratic US Senate victory since 1988. Gina Hinojosa also defeated Governor Greg Abbott, ending more than three decades of Republican leadership in the governor's office.
In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated Republican Senator Roger Marshall. His victory marked the state's first election of a Democratic US senator since 1932, demonstrating the scale of Republican election losses.
Democratic Victories in Key Battleground States
Democrats also flipped Senate seats in Iowa, North Carolina, Maine, Ohio and South Carolina. Josh Turek defeated Ashley Hinson in Iowa, while former Governor Roy Cooper beat Michael Whatley in North Carolina.
Maine voters elected Troy Jackson over Susan Collins. In Ohio, Sherrod Brown defeated Jon Husted, while South Carolina's Annie Andrews overcame Republican incumbent Darline Graham. These contests helped Democrats secure the US Senate majority.
Historic Wins in 2026 US Elections
Democratic gains extended to gubernatorial elections. Rob Sand won in Iowa, while Amy Acton secured Ohio's governorship. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Rick Jackson, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state.
Michigan elected Abdul El-Sayed to the Senate, making him the first Muslim elected to that chamber. Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff also won re-election, strengthening the party's position in a competitive state.
Trump Faces Democratic-Controlled Congress
The results create new political challenges for President Donald Trump during the final two years of his term. Democratic majorities could block key Republican proposals, increase congressional investigations and complicate federal spending negotiations.
Voter concerns over living costs, inflation, immigration enforcement and the Iran war shaped the election debate. The results also offer both parties an early indication of the political issues likely to influence the 2028 presidential election.
The newly elected Congress will take office in January 2027, establishing a divided government and changing the balance of power in Washington.
