Canada has updated its 2026 Express Entry category-based selection priorities to target skilled workers in sectors tied to labor shortages and economic growth.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced the 2026 categories on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. They include French-language proficiency; health care and social services; STEM; trades; education; transport; physicians, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience; and skilled military recruits.
Priority Express Entry categories for 2026
The renewed categories are French-language proficiency, health care and social services, education, STEM and trades. Transport is included for 2026, while targeted categories cover physicians, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, plus skilled military recruits with Canadian Armed Forces job offers.
For occupation-based categories, candidates generally need at least one year of cumulative full-time work experience, or equivalent part-time experience, in a single eligible occupation during the previous three years.
How candidates are selected
Applicants must first qualify for at least one Express Entry program: the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Eligible candidates create a profile and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System score. During category-based rounds, IRCC identifies candidates who meet the category requirements and ranks them by CRS score. Top-ranking candidates may receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence and have 60 days to submit their application.
French and Canadian experience remain important
For the French-language category, candidates need a minimum score of 7 in all four language abilities under the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens. Several 2026 categories also specifically target professionals with Canadian work experience.
IRCC's 2026 approach also places emphasis on candidates eligible for the Canadian Experience Class, which is designed for skilled workers with Canadian work experience seeking permanent residence.
Category eligibility does not guarantee permanent residence
Meeting a category's requirements does not guarantee an invitation. Candidates must remain eligible for an Express Entry program, satisfy the relevant category rules and rank competitively when IRCC conducts a qualifying round.
IRCC says categories are chosen using labor-market information and input from provinces, territories and stakeholders. Category-based selection is reviewed regularly, meaning future priorities can change as Canada's workforce and economic needs evolve.
