As India faces a severe liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage due to the disruption of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which affects nearly 60% of the country’s LPG imports, Argentina has stepped in to provide vital support. The South American country, previously not a key supplier to India, has rapidly become a crucial energy partner, delivering over 50,000 tonnes of LPG in the first quarter of 2026 alone—more than double the amount it shipped in all of 2025.
This shift marks a significant evolution in the bilateral energy relationship between the two countries. Argentina’s Bahia Blanca port has been instrumental in supplying LPG, with shipments arriving in India as early as March 5, 2026. This support underscores Argentina’s role in diversifying India’s energy sourcing, especially as the conflict in West Asia continues to destabilize traditional supply routes.
Argentina, which has substantial natural gas reserves, has been increasing cooperation with India’s energy sector. Discussions between energy officials from both countries, including visits from Argentina’s national gas and oil company representatives, indicate that this collaboration is in its early stages but set to expand. Argentina’s Ambassador to India, Mariano Agustin Cousino, emphasized that the current geopolitical situation could further strengthen this partnership, particularly in the hydrocarbons sector.
Despite logistical challenges posed by the 20,000 km distance between Argentina and India’s Dahej port, which increases transportation costs and delivery times, this cooperation is vital for India’s energy security. Argentina’s entry into India’s energy market provides a much-needed alternative to traditional supply chains, reducing reliance on regions affected by geopolitical instability.
In addition to diversifying LPG imports, India is taking measures to address the crisis domestically. The government has increased commercial LPG allocations and is promoting the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections, encouraging households to transition to a more stable energy source. With Argentina’s ongoing support and the expansion of energy alternatives, India is taking a comprehensive approach to ensuring long-term energy security.
