Thug Life: Mani Ratnam on Kamal Haasan Reunion & Story – Exclusive Interview

How does it feel to reunite with Kamal Haasan after 38 years?
When I first met Kamal, I was new to the industry, and he was already a big star. But he was always open to discussions about films, stories, and music. Working with him again in Thug Life feels like picking up where we left off. He brings unmatched authenticity and depth to the project.

What made Thug Life the project worth this reunion?
We had spoken about collaborating again for years, but the timing never worked out. Thug Life came together organically. Once we both committed, I realized what I’d been missing it’s an honor to direct Kamal again.

Has your dynamic changed since Nayakan?
Not really. Kamal continues to be as passionate and dedicated. He’s a dream to work with and elevates every scene he’s part of. His ability to understand the soul of the story is incredible.

What should fans expect from Thug Life?
Expect an emotionally rich film packed with action. It explores a layered crime world intense, grounded, and dramatic. It’s a world within a world.

Which film better represents your creative chemistry Nayakan or Thug Life?
Hopefully both. Nayakan was iconic in its time. Thug Life is a modern expression of the same collaborative energy, with more experience and a fresh narrative.

Are you concerned about high expectations or audience pressure?
Filmmaking itself comes with so many challenges that there’s no time to stress over external pressure. My focus is always on making the film the best it can be.

How will Thug Life bring people back to theatres?
There's a magic in the big screen and collective viewing. With stars like Kamal, an emotional story, and cinematic scale, Thug Life is made for theatres.

All the best!
Thank you!
