Exclusive Interview: Kishkindhapuri Director Kaushik Pegallapati Promises Thrilling Horror Ride

How did this project start after your debut film?
After Chaavu Kaburu Challaga, I was set to do another film with Geetha Arts, but it was delayed. I narrated this story to producer Sahu Garapati, and he loved it. Later, Sai Sreenivas also listened and got excited. Since everyone connected with it, we started Kishkindhapuri.

Why did you choose to make a horror mystery?
I’ve always been fascinated by horror films and their dedicated fan base. I wanted to create a story that combines horror with mystery to give audiences an edge-of-seat experience. My goal is to bring something new with every film, and this one delivers a fresh take on horror.

How did Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas react to the story?
Sai Sreenivas is known for action roles, but he loved this story instantly and asked me to film it exactly as narrated. He gave me full support, both creatively and technically, to bring the vision to life on screen.

The title ‘Kishkindhapuri’ sounds unique. What is the justification?
The title is metaphorically inspired by the Ramayana. While the film is not a direct retelling, viewers who decode the story will notice several subtle references linked to it.

Tell us about Anupama Parameswaran’s role.
Anupama has taken up a character she has never done before. Both the hero and heroine’s roles are inspired by real-life incidents I have observed. They will appear in a completely new light in this film.

What kind of sets and visuals can audiences expect?
The story revolves around a radio station, so we built a massive vintage-style set to reflect the 1989 setting. We aimed for a unique, eerie atmosphere with visuals and action that drive the suspense throughout.

What feedback did you receive from the censor board?
The censor members felt it’s one of the best horror mysteries in recent times. They mentioned some sequences are genuinely scary. Since there are no smoking or drinking scenes, it’s a clean film for families, though it received an ‘A’ certificate for its intensity.

How important is music in this film?
Chetan’s music is outstanding. He composed three fantastic songs and took the background score to the next level, which elevates the horror and mystery elements greatly.

What are your expectations from Kishkindhapuri?
We are confident we’ve made a sensible and gripping film. With strong visuals, top-notch graphics, and unique storytelling, we believe it will strike a chord with audiences.

What are your future plans after this project?
I already have two scripts ready. Discussions are going on, and after Kishkindhapuri releases, I will share more details about my upcoming films.

All the best,
Thank you
