Why was Karthi’s Annagaru (Va Vathiyar) postponed at the last minute?
The film was postponed due to a legal order from the Madras High Court, which blocked its release because producer Gnanvel Raja failed to clear long-pending dues to financier Arjunlal Sunderdas. Until the debt is fully repaid, the film cannot release in theaters or on any platform.
How much money does the producer owe the financier?
Studio Green initially borrowed Rs. 10.35 crore in 2014. With accumulated interest, the outstanding amount has reached Rs. 21.78 crore.
Did the court give the producer chances to repay the loan?
Yes. The court offered seven opportunities for repayment over multiple hearings. However, the dues remained unpaid, prompting a strict order barring the film’s release.
What was the producer’s response in court?
Gnanvel Raja’s lawyer said they were prepared to pay Rs. 3.75 crore within 24 hours and submit documents of movable assets for the remaining amount. The court felt the producer had already been given enough chances and maintained the stay.
When will Annagaru release now?
As of now, there is no confirmed release date. The film will only release after the full settlement of dues. The makers are expected to issue an official announcement soon.
Are both Tamil and Telugu versions affected?
Yes. Both versions Va Vathiyar (Tamil) and Annagaru Vostaru (Telugu)—have been put on hold despite originally being scheduled for release on December 12.
Is this the first major film facing such a financial release hurdle recently?
No. Before Annagaru, Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2 also faced a release block when Eros withheld the film due to unsettled dues by its production house.
