Exclusive Interview: Shruti Haasan Calls Coolie Her Most Powerful Role in a Mass Entertainer

How is your character in Coolie?
Working with Rajinikanth sir is a blessing. It has been a great experience. This role is personally very close to me, and I’m sure audiences, especially women, will connect with it. It’s filled with strong emotions and beautifully designed by the director.

Are you playing Rajinikanth’s daughter in the film?
No, I play the daughter of Sathyaraj garu in the film.

What was it like sharing screen space with stars like Nagarjuna and Upendra?
It was an amazing experience. I’ve worked with many stars, but this felt different. Not every artist gets to work with such a powerful ensemble. This is a very special movie.

What element in the story made you say yes when Lokesh Kanagaraj narrated it?
Initially, I met him to discuss a music album. During that time, he surprised me by introducing this character. Though his movies usually lean toward dark themes and action, this strong female character really stood out and appealed to me.

Will the family audience connect with this movie?
Definitely. Both Rajinikanth sir’s character and mine have a strong emotional arc that will connect with family audiences.

What kind of role does Nagarjuna play?
It’s amazing. He plays a villain for the first time. Telugu audiences are going to be completely surprised.

How was your working experience with Lokesh Kanagaraj?
He is a director with a clear vision. He knows exactly what he wants, and it’s a joy to work under such clarity.

Do you have scenes with Aamir Khan in the film?
Yes, I do. Aamir Khan is a family friend, and during an important phase in my life, his family stood by me. Sharing screen space with him is very special.

What can you say about the production?
It’s a massive-scale film. The producers didn’t compromise on the budget at all—they gave the story everything it needed.

Have you watched the full movie?
Not yet. I’ve finished my dubbing and watched a few portions. Whatever I’ve seen so far is incredible.

Tell us about Anirudh’s music.
I’ve known Anirudh for a long time, and I’m so proud of his work. His music truly elevates the movie, and he has delivered brilliant tracks for Coolie.

What about the cinematography by Girish?
Girish sir is a director’s DOP. He visualizes exactly what the director wants. His work in Vikram was well-loved, and in this film too, the visuals are outstanding.

Did Rajinikanth share any stories about Kamal Haasan or past memories?
Yes, he shared many special stories about his friendship with my father and their working days. Their bond is truly unique.

Do you have any dream roles?
Not a specific one, but since I’m a musician myself, I’d love to play a musician someday.

You’re one of the few heroines with a long-standing career. Thoughts?
I consider it a blessing. I’ve always enjoyed my work and never overplanned. I just try to give my best to each project that comes my way. That’s how I still work today.

One word to describe Coolie?
Coolie is a full entertainer! It has great action, a solid emotional core, and audiences will definitely enjoy it.

Any upcoming projects?
Last year was all about Coolie. I’m now listening to new stories and looking forward to working with new directors and writers. I’ve heard a few Telugu scripts and will announce something soon.

All the best!
Thank you!
