Vinay, could you share how you discovered Shefali for Kaanta Laga?
Vinay Sapru: We discovered Shefali when she was just 19, an engineering student on Linking Road, Mumbai. She had this unique charm that we thought would be perfect for Kaanta Laga. We were looking for a girl who could effortlessly blend innocence with allure, and Shefali fit the bill perfectly.

What made Shefali stand out for Kaanta Laga?
Vinay Sapru: Shefali had an ethereal quality about her. She was more than just beautiful – she had a spark, a vibrant energy that radiated positivity. When we met her, we knew she was the one we were looking for. She had a presence that made the camera come alive.

How did Shefali react to the massive success of Kaanta Laga?
Vinay Sapru: Shefali was overwhelmed but also incredibly grounded. I remember her coming to our office with copies of Bombay Times, showing off the cover where she was featured. She was overjoyed, but always humble. She really enjoyed the success, but she didn’t let it get to her head. She was full of life, and I could see how proud she was to be a part of something so iconic.

After Kaanta Laga, Shefali didn’t appear in many films. Was she content with that?
Vinay Sapru: Absolutely. Shefali was happy with her work. She had achieved something that many actors only dream of. She did shows worldwide and was always positive, talking about how blessed she felt. She was happy being the Kaanta Laga Girl. She didn’t feel the need to do more – she had already created a legacy.

What was Shefali like behind the scenes?
Vinay Sapru: Shefali was always positive and full of energy. Even when the cameras were off, she was always so enthusiastic about life. She loved what she did, and her spirit was infectious. She was never a victim of circumstances; she was always forward-looking, focused on her dreams.

How did you approach the Kaanta Laga remake, considering Lata Mangeshkar’s original?
Vinay Sapru: When we recreated Kaanta Laga, we made sure not to touch Lataji's vocals. Her rendition is sacred, and no one could do it better than her. While we changed the arrangement and instrumental setup to modernize it, the vocals stayed true to Lataji’s iconic performance.

What do you believe Shefali’s lasting legacy will be?
Vinay Sapru: Shefali’s legacy is immortalized in Kaanta Laga. Her role in that song was transformative for her career and for Bollywood music videos in general. She remains one of the most iconic faces of that era, and her positive spirit and dedication will always be remembered.
