Exclusive Interview with Lyricist Anantha Sreeram on the Viral Hit Rai Rai Rara from Peddi
How does it feel to see the overwhelming response to the song “Rai Rai Rara”?
It feels amazing. The appreciation for the lyrics, especially when people say specific lines resonated with them, is truly fulfilling. Despite being a mass song, the lyrics have managed to stand out, which is a big achievement.
What is the inspiration behind the song "Rai Rai Rara"?
The director, Buchi Babu Sir, wanted the song to be an anthem for the youth. He emphasized that it should have a philosophical undertone, while still being practical and easy for the audience to connect with. The whole process was about making it an anthem, and I wanted to write it like a poem, drawing inspiration from Sri Sri’s style.
Can you talk about the unique elements in the song's lyrics?
The song doesn’t fit into a typical love song or item number. We wanted it to be different, reflecting a deeper meaning while still being accessible. The lyrics have a conversational tone, almost like a dialogue between two friends, which I feel resonates with a wide audience.
What challenges did you face while writing the song?
Writing a mass song that carries a meaningful message was a challenge. It's not easy to incorporate philosophy into mass language without it feeling forced. AR Rahman’s music added a layer of complexity, making sure every line was experimental and impactful. It took a lot of effort and several months to get it right.
How did Ram Charan react after hearing the song?
Ram Charan gave me complete creative freedom. When I played the song for him on set, he was deeply moved. It was an emotional moment, knowing that he appreciated the work.
What do you think is the secret to the song’s massive success?
It’s a combination of factors: the music by AR Rahman, the brilliant choreography by Johnny Master, the visuals by Rathnavelu, and of course, the direction by Buchi Babu. All these elements came together perfectly, and the song has managed to resonate with people on multiple levels.
How do you feel about working with the Mega family?
It’s been a great honor. My first film as a lyricist was with Chiranjeevi Sir, and now, to work with his son, Ram Charan, in the same year, is a huge blessing. The support and love from the Mega family have been incredible, and I feel fortunate to be a part of this journey.
Do you have any more songs coming up?
Yes, there are three more songs from Peddi coming soon. Also, I’m working on tracks for upcoming films like Spirit and Chennai Love Story, which are shaping up to be really special.
How has the industry shaped your 20-year journey as a lyricist?
Over 20 years, I’ve learned that getting opportunities is tough, but sustaining success is even harder. I’ve always focused on evolving myself, and I believe consistency has been the key to my success. Every year, I aim to create something new and fresh, and that drive has kept me going.
All the best,
Thank You.
