Shiva Balaji Talks About His Role in Kannappa – An Exclusive Interview

How did your journey with Kannappa begin?
It started casually over lunch with Mohan Babu garu and Vishnu. After some discussion, Vishnu mentioned there wasn’t a substantial role for me, but Mohan Babu garu insisted, and soon enough, I was offered the role of Kumaradeva Sastry, the son of Mahadeva Sastry, played by Mohan Babu garu.

What kind of preparation went into your character in the film?
I didn’t need much external reference. Since my character is Mohan Babu garu’s son, I mirrored his strict demeanor and emotional traits, particularly his dislike of being touched, which added an emotional depth to my character.

Can you describe your role in Kannappa?
My character is supporting but impactful. I play Kumaradeva Sastry, who is not allowed access to the sacred Vayu Lingam. The film’s narrative includes different factions, and my character shares substantial screen time with Mohan Babu garu.

You’ve not been doing many films lately. Why is that?
I’ve become very selective. I choose roles that resonate with me and offer a solid opportunity for performance. If a script doesn’t connect with me, I pass.

Have you watched Kannappa? What’s your feedback?
Yes, I’ve seen the film, and it’s extraordinary. The second half especially has a strong emotional and visual impact.

How significant is Prabhas’ role in Kannappa?
Prabhas appears for around 40 minutes, and his presence is impactful. From his entry to the end, his scenes are engaging, and Vishnu did a fantastic job in writing and executing the role.

What about the other major characters in the film?
Every character in Kannappa holds significance. When Mohanlal enters, the story takes a new turn, and Prabhas’ role further accelerates the pace. Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva delivers powerful yet simple dialogues.

What can we expect from Kannappa in terms of its devotional theme?
Expect goosebump-inducing sequences. It’s not just a film; it’s a spiritual experience that will leave a lasting emotional impact.

How was working with Mohan Babu garu off-screen?
He’s warm, caring, and treats us like family. I became closer to Vishnu during the MAA elections, even though we had met before.

Did you accept the role mainly because of Mohan Babu garu?
It took me two days to decide. I asked Vishnu directly if I was being pushed into the role, and he assured me it was my call. I’m glad I said yes it’s a role I would regret missing.

Did you contribute to the production side of Kannappa?
Yes, I was keen on helping with the food arrangements and even brought along a chef to assist wherever needed.

There were rumors about Mohan Babu buying 7000 acres in New Zealand. Is that true?
That was just a joke! They leased 7000 acres in Rotorua, New Zealand, for the shoot. We also shot parts of the film in Wanaka, South Island.

With the rise of OTT platforms, are you open to working on digital content?
Yes, definitely. I’m planning to come back with Recce 2 soon after my break from OTT content.

What’s your take on the evolution of Bigg Boss?
Honestly, I’m not a fan of the current format. When I did it, it felt more genuine, but now it feels a bit pre-designed. It did help me gain a strong fan base, though.

How was it working with director Mukesh Kumar Singh?
Mukesh Kumar Singh is very polite, passionate about history, and enjoys traveling. He handled Kannappa very well, and his collaboration with Vishnu made the film truly special.

Can you elaborate on your bond with Vishnu?
Vishnu is a cool person, very different from what you see on social media. In Kannappa, he paid great attention to every aspect of the production, making sure everything was perfect.

What’s your view on social media influencers and their impact?
Influencers have contributed to spreading negativity, affecting both celebrities and common people.

There were talks of objectionable scenes in Kannappa. What’s your take on it?
There were no truly objectionable scenes, but out of respect, we removed some dialogues to avoid controversy.

How is Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva?
Initially, Prabhas was considered for the role of Lord Shiva. However, Akshay Kumar was perfect for the role and did full justice to it, looking divine on screen.

What’s your next project?
I’m working on a thriller produced by Mohan Babu garu, directed by a Tamil filmmaker. More details will be shared soon.
