Kubera Is a Film Like Never Before: Sekhar Kammula Exclusive Interview
What inspired you to make Kubera?
Sekhar Kammula: It’s an emotionally rich story about a billionaire and a beggar. Their worlds collide, and that contrast really fascinated me.
Was Nagarjuna your first choice for the role?
Kammula: Absolutely. He fits the layered role perfectly and brings a unique screen presence. You’ll see him in a completely new light.
Why did you cast Dhanush as the lead?
Kammula: No one else could have pulled it off. He’s lived the character, and his performance is simply extraordinary.
What makes Kubera different from your other films?
Kammula: I don’t make films to stick to a certain mark. I just stay true to the story. Kubera may feel different, but it’s as honest as all my previous films.
Is this your biggest-budget project?
Kammula: Yes, and it was possible only because of my producers. They supported every creative decision without hesitation.
Any specific challenges during the shoot?
Kammula: Shooting in Mumbai was very tough due to permission issues, but we managed. The city was essential for the story.
Is there a sequel planned for Kubera or Leader?
Kammula: Kubera ends here. As for Leader, I’ve thought about a sequel, but the country and people have changed a lot since then. It needs a fresh take.
How do you feel looking back on your 25-year career?
Kammula: It’s emotional. From a small beginning to where I am today, I’m filled with gratitude. The audience has always supported me.
All the best
Thank you.
