Laya Talks About Her Role in Sampraadayini Suppini Suddhapusani: Exclusive Interview

Laya Talks About Her Role in Sampraadayini Suppini Suddhapusani: Exclusive Interview

How did it feel to act with Shivaji again after nearly 20 years?
Laya: It has been almost 20 years since we worked together. Initially, I thought it was a family drama, but when I learned it was an out-and-out comedy, I was thrilled. Comedy is my favorite genre, and the film has an interesting mix of humor, twists, and thrilling elements. It’s a dark comedy crime thriller, and I felt a unique vibe when I first heard the story.

What is your role like in Sampraadayini Suppini Suddhapusani?
Laya: I play the character Uttara, and it's a role unlike anything I’ve done before. Uttara is a strong character who even dominates the powerful role of Mangapathi. Shivaji encouraged me a lot, and I really enjoyed playing this character. The scenes between Shivaji and me will be hilarious, and I’m excited for the audience to see it.

Was the film initially planned for OTT? How do you feel about its release in theatres now?
Laya: Initially, the film was planned for a theatrical release, but there was a stage when it was suggested to stream on OTT. I was disappointed because I’ve always seen myself on the big screen. But after many prominent people saw the film, they felt it deserved a theatrical release, and now we’re happy it's coming to theatres. My daughter was particularly upset about the OTT release, so we’re all thrilled for the big-screen release.

What are your expectations for the film?
Laya: The trailer has been well-received, and everyone has loved it. Sampraadayini Suppini Suddhapusani will be an entertaining film that appeals to all sections of the audience. People will leave the theatre feeling satisfied, having watched a good movie.

How has Shivaji changed over the years?
Laya: Shivaji's love for cinema has grown even more over time. He is incredibly passionate about his work and constantly thinks about how to bring his films to the audience. Compared to earlier, his love for films has become even stronger.

What about director Sudheer Sriram?
Laya: Sudheer Sriram is a talented director with a clear vision. He wrote the story excellently and executed it with great clarity. He knows exactly what he wants from the actors, and he made sure the film was hilarious and engaging.

Can you share something special about your role in the film?
Laya: I’m known for playing emotional roles where I make others cry. But in this film, my character Uttara makes others cry! It’s a selfish character who mostly thinks about her family. I really enjoyed playing this role, which was quite different from what I’ve done before.

What kind of roles would you like to do in the future?
Laya: I’m open to both lead roles and smaller roles if the story and character are compelling. The scope for female roles is limited, so I want to choose the best roles that come my way. While I’ve done soft roles in the past, I’m now looking for strong characters where I can make a statement. Vadhalu will showcase another side of me.

What upcoming films do you have in the pipeline?
Laya: I’m doing a psychological thriller called Vadhalu, where I play the wife of Jagapathi Babu. I’m also working on a socio-fantasy film with Srikanth, directed by Nageswara Reddy. It’s in the style of Yamaleela. I’m experimenting with different genres, and I’m excited about the diversity of roles.

All the best,
Than You.
