Actor Ram Charan praised you at the trailer launch. How did that feel?
It felt amazing. I’ve known Charan anna since childhood. The way he appreciated me and the whole team truly made me happy.
The film is being compared to Magadheera. Is it similar in theme?
The story is set in 1948, centred around war and emotional conflict. It has a grand action drama element. We created the fictional character Michael within the real backdrop of Byranpalli.
How did you prepare for the role?
I usually speak Telugu, but this character is a proper Hyderabadi. I trained specifically for the accent with workshops and guidance from my director.
Why did this film take three years?
I entered the industry early at 21. Many actors arrive at 25. I needed maturity and growth. These three years helped me evolve as a person and artist.
What did you learn in these three years?
Acting requires understanding human emotions. I travelled a lot, gained life experiences, and found clarity. It was personally fulfilling.
Tell us about the action sequences.
Peter sir designed extraordinary action. I even suffered injuries, but that’s natural with intense action films.
Did you take any historical references?
Yes. The story is set after India’s independence when Hyderabad was still not free. The team researched every detail from costumes to location references.
How was your experience working with Kovai Sarala?
She has wonderful timing and energy. Acting with her and other senior actors was a great experience.
The visuals look massive. Did you feel pressure?
The scale is huge, but pressure is normal. My focus remained on performance. Every character from Byranpalli has meaning and purpose.
How did you engage with the script?
I loved the story instantly. I mainly discussed character detailing with the director.
Share your thoughts on Anaswara Rajan.
She has done around 25 Malayalam films. Her character is very meaningful and adds fun and depth to the drama.
How is the music shaping up?
The background score is fresh. Mickey J Meyer has delivered something new and powerful, especially in the action portions.
What about the vintage car and objects seen in the visuals?
Every object has significance. Even the car acts as a character.
Football plays a role in the story?
Yes, football motivates the hero. I played in school, so it helped.
What kind of films do you want to do going forward?
I prefer films that feel different. Audiences are seeking new experiences in theatres, and so do I.
How was it working with Kalyan Chakravarthy?
His role is inspired by a real character. Working with him was a beautiful and inspiring experience.
How has Champion changed you?
It gave me patience and maturity. You will see a new Roshan.
Your industry circle?
Akhil and Thaman are good friends. We play cricket together.
Do you take script advice from your father?
He listens, but final decisions are mine.
Director Pradeep Advaitham’s contribution?
He connects naturally with the emotion of the story. His casting and execution are perfect.
What about Swapna Cinema’s support?
They are like family. Their trust and vision mean a lot to me.
Any guidance from Nag Ashwin?
He told me to open up more and be expressive.
Did you always want to become an actor?
I wanted to be a cricketer first, but films eventually pulled me in.
How long was the shoot?
Around 100 days, including extensive action schedules.
Your co-star Sreeleela is now a star. Do you stay in touch?
Yes, she’s a good friend. I’m happy for her success.
What can audiences expect from Champion?
Grand action, deep human emotion, village drama, and strong emotional connection.
What’s next?
Announcements coming soon. I plan to do more films with less gap between releases.
All the best
Thank you.
