Kamal Haasan Shuts Down Retirement Rumours

Iconic actor Kamal Haasan, who turns 70 this year, has put an end to speculation about his retirement from cinema. During the pre-release event of his upcoming film Thug Life held in Kochi, the veteran actor addressed the swirling rumours with characteristic wit and clarity. “My retirement means I’m dead,” Kamal quipped, drawing cheers from fans and applause from industry insiders.

Despite being one of India’s most seasoned actors with over six decades in the film industry, Kamal confirmed that he has no plans to step away from cinema. “The fire still burns within me,” he said. “Yes, I enjoy my time in Kerala and appreciate moments of peace but leaving movies? Not yet, and not anytime soon.”

Kamal’s strong statement comes ahead of the release of Thug Life, a high-stakes gangster drama directed by Mani Ratnam. The film, slated for a June 5, 2025 release, marks the legendary duo’s second collaboration after the iconic Nayakan.

Thug Life stars:

  • Silambarasan

  • Trisha Krishnan

  • And a host of powerful supporting actors

The story follows a feared mafia leader (Kamal Haasan) and his adopted son, whose once-unbreakable bond is tested by betrayal, ambition, and the cost of power. The film promises a gritty and emotionally layered narrative, blending Mani Ratnam’s storytelling finesse with Kamal’s intense screen presence.

Kamal Haasan has consistently defied age and genre norms throughout his career, with roles ranging from comedic to complex, from experimental to epic. His recent projects, including his political engagements and hosting duties, had fueled rumours of a possible retirement. But with Thug Life and other future projects, he’s made it abundantly clear he’s not going anywhere.
