Chatha Pacha : Latest Malayalam Movie Review

Chatha Pacha : Latest Malayalam Movie Review

Plot:
Chatha Pacha: The Ring of Rowdies follows a group of childhood friends in Kochi, who are influenced by the world of professional wrestling. The story centers on Savio, Vetri, and Little, who are drawn into a rivalry with Maani's gang. As the years pass, Little returns to Kochi with the idea of introducing costume wrestling. The group attempts to revive this childhood passion, but conflicts, betrayals, and unresolved issues from the past threaten their goal of success.

Overview:
Directed by debutant Advaith Nair, Chatha Pacha combines elements of nostalgia, action, and drama, with a storyline rooted in pro-wrestling culture. The film showcases the rise of a desi wrestling circuit in Kochi, drawing inspiration from the iconic WWF/WWE era. While the film excels in capturing the fun and excitement of wrestling, its dramatic elements fail to leave a lasting impact, leading to an underwhelming climax.

Performances:
The performances are a mixed bag. Arjun Ashokan, Ishan Shoukath, and Roshan Matthew effectively portray their characters, bringing the emotional depth needed for the film. However, some of the supporting characters, like Rosamma (Vedhika Sreekumar), were underutilized, reducing the overall impact. Vishak Nair as the antagonist provides a menacing presence but also deserved more screen time.

Technical Aspects:
The cinematography by Anend C. Chandran captures the essence of wrestling but falters during the film's climax, where the visual impact diminishes. The set and art design departments deserve praise for their strong aesthetic, which contributes to the film's vibrant visuals.

Music:
The music, composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, complements the film’s tone but does not stand out significantly. The background score by Mujeeb Majeed effectively supports the narrative, especially during the action sequences, but lacks the kind of memorable tracks that could elevate the film further.

Editing:
Praveen Prabhakar’s editing is one of the film's stronger points, keeping the narrative crisp and moving forward at a steady pace. However, the editing doesn't fully address the pacing issues that arise during some of the dramatic moments, especially in the second half.

Positives:

  • Nostalgia-filled wrestling sequences.
  • Strong performances from the lead cast.
  • Fun and engaging pre-interval action scenes.
  • Visually striking cinematography and set design.

Negatives:

  • Underdeveloped plot and conflicts.
  • Weak dramatic elements.
  • Climax fails to deliver on expectations.
  • Some characters are underutilized.

Analysis:
Chatha Pacha has a strong concept and an engaging premise, leveraging the love for pro-wrestling that many grew up watching. The film shines when focusing on the wrestling world and action-packed sequences but falters when it tries to integrate too much drama. The underdeveloped plot and lackluster climax prevent it from becoming the engaging drama it aimed to be.

Bottomline: A promising concept let down by weak drama.

Rating: 2.5/5
