Modi’s G7 Visit Highlights India’s Expanding Global Role

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the 2026 G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France marked a significant moment in India’s global diplomacy, with discussions focusing on economic cooperation, emerging technologies, maritime security and global governance. India positioned itself as a key voice for the Global South while engaging closely with major global powers.

Address on Global Trust and Cooperation

During the outreach session, PM Modi addressed global leaders on the need to rebuild international solidarity, stating that the world today faces a “shortage of trust rather than resources.” He emphasised that mutual trust remains the most important strategic asset in international relations and called for partnerships based on equality rather than dependency.

He further highlighted that the effectiveness of global cooperation should be measured by the ability of nations to empower one another rather than create donor-recipient frameworks.

Maritime Security and Global Trade Concerns

Modi also raised concerns regarding maritime security and the safety of global shipping routes. Referring to recent incidents involving Indian seafarers in the Gulf region, he urged countries to ensure freedom of navigation and protection of maritime workers. His remarks reinforced India’s growing focus on securing global supply chains and sea lanes critical to international trade.

Bilateral Engagements with Global Leaders

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi held several high-level bilateral meetings. In discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, both leaders agreed to establish a High-Level Mechanism to double bilateral trade within five years and accelerate negotiations on the India–EU Free Trade Agreement. Cooperation in defence, space technology, innovation and advanced manufacturing was also expanded.

In his meeting with US President Donald Trump, the leaders reviewed progress on the India–US COMPACT initiative and discussed ongoing efforts to stabilise West Asia. Both sides expressed optimism over progress in an interim trade agreement framework.

During talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, India and Canada committed to finalising a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by 2026 and deepening cooperation in energy trade and security.

India Pushes Global Technology and AI Initiatives

A major outcome of the visit was the India–France Innovation Roadmap 2030, which places artificial intelligence at the centre of bilateral cooperation. The framework focuses on ethical AI development, data privacy, child safety online and alignment with democratic values.

Both countries also launched the India–France InnoXchange Bridge, connecting universities, startups and research institutions to promote innovation in aerospace, AI and deep-tech sectors. India’s participation as the official AI Country Partner at VivaTech 2026 further strengthened this collaboration.

Expanding Global Partnerships and Strategic Platforms

India and Canada also launched the Raisina Americas platform to strengthen cooperation in diplomacy, innovation and security across the Western Hemisphere. Additionally, India supported Canada’s entry as a Dialogue Partner in the Indian Ocean Rim Association, reinforcing maritime cooperation and supply chain resilience.
