Trump faces backlash over threat against Iran amid rising tensions

President Donald Trump faced widespread criticism after issuing a stark warning toward Iran, threatening the destruction of the country’s civilization if it failed to meet U.S. demands by 8:00 PM on Tuesday, though the exact date was not specified. The remarks, posted on social media, intensified already heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.

Iran responded by suspending direct communications with Washington, while continuing indirect discussions through cease-fire mediators. The escalation drew concern from lawmakers across party lines. Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican ally of Trump, cautioned against targeting civilian infrastructure, calling such action a “huge mistake.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized the remarks and urged Republican leaders to intervene.

Prominent conservative voices also expressed concern, urging restraint against any potential large-scale military action that could harm civilians. Meanwhile, Russia and China vetoed a proposed United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at pressuring Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring growing global divisions over the crisis.

According to U.S. officials, more than 50 strikes were carried out on military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island early Tuesday. Vice President JD Vance stated that U.S. military objectives had been achieved, adding that the next steps depend on Tehran’s response.

Separately, violence linked to regional tensions surfaced in Turkey, where one attacker was killed and two others injured in a gunfire exchange near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul.
