O Panneerselvam (OPS), a three-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and leader of the AIADMK, has announced his decision to quit the BJP alliance ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This decision is a significant blow to the BJP’s election plans in the state, particularly as OPS holds substantial sway in the influential Thevar community from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The decision follows OPS’ exclusion from high-profile meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, which left him feeling sidelined.
OPS’ exit from the alliance is not just a personal blow to BJP, but it also signals potential changes in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. He has a large support base and the loyalty of a significant portion of the AIADMK's grassroots workers. This loyalty stems from his deep-rooted connection with the Thevar community, a group that accounts for 10-12% of Tamil Nadu’s population, and whose votes were crucial in the AIADMK's victories in past elections.
OPS has suggested that he will soon reveal his future plans, hinting at a possible alliance with the DMK, though such a move would be complicated due to his association with J Jayalalithaa and his status as the "true heir" of AIADMK. A potential alliance with MK Stalin’s DMK could spark protests from his supporters, as it could be seen as a betrayal of the AIADMK's legacy. Alternatively, OPS might consider going solo, which could split votes within the Thevar community and potentially diminish AIADMK's standing in the election, benefiting the DMK.
Another possibility is a potential alliance with actor-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). However, any move in this direction would also require the approval of Edappadi K Palaniswami, AIADMK’s current leader, which seems unlikely given the political tensions.
The political ramifications of OPS’ decision are far-reaching. BJP’s attempts to break into Tamil Nadu’s voter base, which has been difficult for them, could face additional challenges without OPS’ support. The split could also negatively affect the AIADMK-BJP alliance, particularly in the southern regions, where OPS’ loyalists dominate.
OPS' move will also have a direct impact on the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu elections, as the loss of his backing could significantly alter the balance of power, especially among Thevar voters who have traditionally supported AIADMK. Whether OPS will form a new alliance or go solo, the political stakes in Tamil Nadu are higher than ever, making the 2026 Assembly elections one of the most fiercely contested in recent history.
