BCCI Defends India After Pakistan’s Handshake Complaint In Asia Cup 2025

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially addressed the controversy surrounding the handshake row during the Asia Cup 2025 clash between India and Pakistan. Following India’s 7-wicket victory, captain Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates did not exchange handshakes with Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha or the opposing team. This move sparked outrage from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which lodged a formal complaint with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and even escalated the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

According to a senior BCCI official, the act of shaking hands is a symbolic goodwill gesture but not a mandated rule in cricket. “If you read the rule book, there is no specification about shaking hands with the opposition. It is a convention followed across sports, not a law. Given the strained history between the two countries, the Indian cricket team is not bound to participate in such gestures,” the official said. The clarification comes after the PCB accused Team India of violating the spirit of cricket and demanded the immediate removal of match referee Andy Pycroft, alleging bias and misconduct.

Pakistan’s complaint has highlighted the political and diplomatic undertones that continue to influence cricketing ties between the two nations. While India maintains that it has not breached any laws, the PCB insists the incident damages the values of the game. Social media has since been divided, with some fans supporting India’s stance in light of ongoing tensions, while others believe sporting spirit must be upheld regardless of political differences.

BCCI’s position makes it clear that handshakes remain optional, and no player can be forced into the practice. The episode has now turned into another chapter in the long history of India-Pakistan cricket disputes, showing how sportsmanship often collides with broader geopolitical realities. As the Asia Cup continues, it remains to be seen whether governing bodies like the ICC or ACC will take further action or let the matter rest as a symbolic disagreement.
