Russia’s Lavrov accuses US of targeting oil resources in foreign policy

Russia’s foreign minister accuses the US of pursuing oil-driven interventions in Iran and Venezuela, raising concerns over global energy dominance and geopolitical tensions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the United States of pursuing foreign interventions to secure control over global oil and energy resources, escalating rhetoric between Moscow and Washington. Speaking in an interview with Russian state television, Lavrov said the United States prioritizes its own economic and strategic interests and is willing to use extreme measures to achieve them.

Lavrov alleged that US actions in countries such as Iran and Venezuela are primarily motivated by access to oil reserves. He claimed Washington seeks to dominate global energy markets, stating that US officials no longer conceal these intentions. According to Lavrov, this approach reflects a broader doctrine aimed at securing influence over critical energy supplies.

He further argued that such policies signal a weakening of international legal norms, suggesting that global decision-making is increasingly shaped by power rather than established rules. Lavrov warned that this trend could lead to a return to an era where geopolitical influence overrides diplomatic agreements and international law.

The Russian foreign minister also criticized US diplomatic practices, accusing Washington of withdrawing from agreements and failing to engage in constructive dialogue. His remarks come as US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner prepare for talks in Pakistan, part of ongoing efforts to address regional tensions involving Iran.

At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Islamabad as part of a broader regional diplomatic tour. The White House, through press secretary Karoline Leavitt, indicated that while the United States remains open to negotiations, it is not under pressure to reach a deal.

Lavrov also linked US foreign policy to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and disputes over energy supplies in Europe. He accused Washington of encouraging European nations to reduce dependence on Russian gas, characterizing these actions as part of a broader strategy to reshape global energy dynamics.
