Trump raises pressure over Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could move to control the Strait of Hormuz if Iran does not reach a deal with Washington, escalating tensions as US Iran talks continue in Switzerland. In remarks during a media interview, Trump said the US could act as a “guardian angel” for the strategic waterway and suggested Washington could claim a share linked to oil movement through the strait. His comments added pressure to already fragile negotiations involving regional security, oil flows and Iran’s role in the Middle East.
Trump also warned that the US could collect tolls if no agreement is reached, while using forceful language to describe a possible response if Washington believed action was necessary. The remarks came as the Strait of Hormuz remained a major concern for global energy markets because of its importance to oil shipping. Any threat involving the waterway can quickly affect energy prices, shipping confidence and diplomatic calculations across the region.
Iran reacts during Switzerland talks
The comments triggered a sharp response from Iran while its delegation was in Switzerland for talks. Iranian representatives reportedly left the negotiating venue in protest after Trump’s remarks, though discussions later remained part of the broader diplomatic effort. The episode reflected how quickly public statements from either side can disrupt negotiations that are already shaped by mistrust and recent military tensions.
Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf rejected the threats and said Iran would not base its decisions on pressure from Washington. He warned that Iran’s armed forces were prepared to respond if necessary, signaling that Tehran intended to maintain a firm posture despite ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Lebanon and oil routes add pressure
Trump also warned Iran to stop its proxies in Lebanon, including Hezbollah, from creating further trouble, saying Tehran could face stronger action if the situation escalates. That warning linked the Switzerland talks not only to the Strait of Hormuz but also to conflict dynamics in Lebanon. With oil routes, regional militias and diplomacy all part of the same crisis, the negotiations remain fragile and highly sensitive.
