US Army Missile Stockpile Depleted During Iran War

The US Army missile stockpile has reportedly declined after extensive Iran war missile use, raising concerns over the ATACMS stockpile shortage, PrSM missile shortage, and overall US military readiness. Officials are now focused on rebuilding long-range precision missile inventories while maintaining global defense capabilities.

The US Army missile stockpile has reportedly fallen to critically low levels after five months of war with Iran. Heavy ATACMS and PrSM missile use has increased concerns about long-range precision weapons, production capacity and US military readiness.

ATACMS stockpile shortage grows during Iran operations

The United States has reportedly used nearly all available Army Tactical Missile Systems and Precision Strike Missiles allocated for operational use during its prolonged campaign against Iran, according to people familiar with US weapons inventories.

The affected weapons are ground-launched, surface-to-surface precision missiles designed to strike command centres, missile sites, air-defence systems and other high-value targets from long distances. Their use allows US forces to attack defended positions without placing pilots directly over hostile territory.

However, the Pentagon has not publicly released complete ATACMS or PrSM inventory figures. Therefore, claims that the weapons have been “virtually exhausted” remain based largely on assessments from unnamed officials rather than independently verifiable stockpile data. The US military maintains that it retains the weapons and capabilities required to carry out assigned missions.

PrSM missile shortage exposes production challenge

The Precision Strike Missile is the Army’s newer replacement for ATACMS. Lockheed Martin describes PrSM as a next-generation weapon capable of striking targets at ranges beyond 499 kilometres. It can be launched from mobile rocket systems, giving ground forces the ability to attack targets deep inside contested territory.

Its operational value has also created a supply problem. PrSM entered service only recently, meaning the Army began the Iran conflict with a much smaller inventory than it held for older weapons. Earlier assessments indicated that a large share of both ATACMS and PrSM stocks had already been fired during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Missile production cannot immediately match wartime consumption. Guidance systems, rocket motors, explosives and specialised electronic components require long manufacturing cycles. Expanding a production line also depends on trained workers, secure suppliers and long-term government contracts.

Iran war missile use raises wider readiness concerns

The shortage matters beyond the Middle East. Long-range precision missiles would play an important role in any major conflict involving Russia or China. Using large quantities in Iran could leave fewer weapons available for deterrence, training, overseas deployments or an unexpected crisis elsewhere.

The problem is not limited to offensive Army missiles. Separate assessments have also reported major reductions in Patriot and THAAD interceptor inventories used to defend US forces and allies from Iranian missiles. The Pentagon disputes suggestions that the United States is unable to meet its defence requirements, but analysts warn that prolonged operations can expose weaknesses in even a large military supply system.
