One year after the deadly attack in Pahalgam, India has taken its message on terrorism to a global stage through an exhibition at Capitol Hill in Washington, organized by the Embassy of India, Washington, D.C.. The event, titled “The Human Cost of Terrorism,” was held to commemorate the victims and highlight the lasting impact of violence on civilians. The attack, which took place on April 22 last year in Jammu and Kashmir, claimed 26 lives and left dozens injured when armed militants opened fire on tourists.
The exhibition features photographs, personal belongings, and survivor testimonies, presenting a deeply human perspective on the tragedy. Victims included honeymooners, pilgrims, and ordinary citizens, each story underscoring the personal loss behind the statistics. The initiative aims to shift the focus from numbers to narratives, emphasizing the real cost of terrorism on families and communities.
The event drew bipartisan attendance from US lawmakers, including members of key congressional groups focused on foreign affairs and India relations. In a city often defined by political divisions, the presence of leaders from both parties reflected shared concern over global terrorism and the need for collective action.
India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, described the exhibition as both a tribute and a call to action. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing terrorism and reiterated India’s commitment to confronting such threats. Lawmakers echoed similar sentiments, calling for stronger partnerships and consistent efforts to combat extremist violence.
Several members of Congress highlighted the broader implications of terrorism, stressing the need for intelligence sharing and coordinated responses. The discussion also touched on regional challenges, with calls for accountability and preventive measures against groups responsible for such attacks.
The exhibition comes at a time when US-India relations continue to expand across defense and technology sectors. Against this backdrop, the event reinforced a shared commitment to democratic values and collective security. By bringing personal stories to an international platform, India has sought to strengthen global awareness and encourage a unified stance against terrorism.
