Netflix is preparing to release The Decoy Plane, a new Instadocs documentary examining President Donald Trump’s secret aircraft switch during his July 2026 trip to Turkey. The film uses firsthand accounts to explore the security operation, the role of the press corps and why reporters continued aboard what effectively became a decoy plane.

The incident took place on July 8 as President Donald Trump was returning from a NATO summit in Turkey. According to Netflix’s official description, Trump initially boarded Air Force One before quietly leaving the aircraft and being transferred in a catering truck to another military plane. Reporters traveling with the president remained aboard the original aircraft without knowing he had switched planes.
The White House’s official NATO Summit gallery confirms Trump was in Ankara on July 8 and shows him boarding Air Force One at Ankara Esenboga International Airport for the return journey to the United States. The documentary focuses on what happened after that publicly visible departure.
Secret Service ruse becomes documentary focus
Netflix says the aircraft swap was designed as a security measure, illustrating how far the Secret Service may go to protect a sitting president. The documentary also examines the unusual consequence of that decision: the traveling press corps continued its journey while unaware that the president was no longer on the same plane.
Trump later said security officials and the military had recommended using another aircraft and that he followed their advice. The operation has since attracted attention because of the unusual combination of presidential security, military aviation and the deliberate use of a decoy aircraft.

The Decoy Plane is built around interviews with people who were directly connected to the event. Netflix says participants include Reuters White House reporter Gram Slattery, AP photographer Alex Brandon, investigative journalist Carol Leonnig, Washington Post reporter Dan Lamothe, former Secret Service agent Robert McDonald and former Air Force One crew member Wanda Joell.

Netflix expands quick-turn Instadocs series
The Decoy Plane is the third installment of Netflix’s Instadocs format, which the company describes as a quick-turn documentary series designed to reach viewers while major stories are still part of public conversation. It follows Instadocs: Alex Murdaugh, Unconvicted and Instadocs: The Prediction Games.
Steve Yaccino serves as showrunner, while Words + Pictures produces the documentary. Netflix has scheduled Instadocs: The Decoy Plane to premiere on September 4, 2026, giving viewers a detailed reconstruction of one of the more unusual presidential security operations of Trump’s current term.
