NEW DELHI: Women travelling on Delhi government buses may soon need a Pink Saheli Card to continue enjoying free rides under the state’s public transport welfare scheme. According to government officials, the transition is expected to begin in July as authorities push commuters toward a fully digital ticketing system across the city’s bus network.
The Delhi government aims to modernize public transport operations by replacing paper-based verification methods with digital smart cards. Officials believe the new system will help improve passenger tracking, reduce misuse of free travel benefits, and speed up the boarding process for daily commuters. Women passengers currently receiving free rides through pink tickets are expected to gradually shift to the Pink Saheli Card system over the next few months.
Transport department sources said the digital move is being implemented in phases to avoid confusion among commuters. Awareness campaigns and registration drives are likely to be conducted at major bus terminals and metro-connected bus stops. The government is also expected to simplify the application process so that women from all income groups can easily obtain the card without difficulty.
The announcement has triggered mixed reactions among commuters. While many women welcomed the convenience of a reusable digital card, others raised concerns about accessibility for senior citizens and those unfamiliar with online registration systems. Officials have assured that support centers and offline assistance will be made available during the transition period.
Delhi Transport Corporation and cluster bus services are likely to integrate the Pink Saheli Card system with future smart mobility initiatives planned for the capital. The government believes the change will strengthen transparency and improve efficiency in one of India’s busiest public transport systems.
Authorities are expected to release detailed guidelines regarding card issuance, eligibility requirements, and implementation timelines in the coming weeks. Until then, the existing free ride system using pink tickets will continue without interruption for women commuters across Delhi.
