Zelensky cautioned that intensified Russia attacks could further complicate already fragile diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict. He suggested that sustained strikes on Ukraine’s energy network risk deepening mistrust and reducing the likelihood of meaningful peace talks in the near term. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that damage to electricity generation and distribution systems poses serious humanitarian and economic risks, particularly during colder months when demand for power is high.
The president’s remarks followed a separate appeal directed at the United States and European partners to increase pressure on individuals connected to Moscow’s war effort. In a message posted on the social media platform X, Zelensky urged Western governments to consider deporting wealthy Russian elites and family members of officials who he claims continue to benefit from assets and lifestyles in Europe and the US while supporting the Kremlin’s military campaign.
Zelensky argued that while Europe has taken significant steps through sanctions, additional measures remain necessary. He specifically called for tougher action against Russia’s state nuclear agency Rosatom and against individuals whose relatives live abroad using funds linked to the Russian state. According to him, many such families maintain properties and finance education in Western countries, creating what Kyiv views as a contradiction in the current sanctions regime.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that closing these gaps would strengthen international efforts to curb Russia’s financial and political leverage. His comments reflect Kyiv’s broader push for sustained Western support, including air defence systems and expanded economic sanctions, as the conflict continues with no immediate resolution in sight.
