Standoff ends after mediation
A three-day standoff involving a group of Nihang Sikhs at a gurdwara in Nagrasu, Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, ended peacefully after talks involving officials and delegations from Punjab and Paonta Sahib. The resolution brought relief to the area after days of tension around the religious premises, where authorities had maintained a close watch to prevent the situation from escalating.
Police officials said the matter was defused after the delegation visited the gurdwara and held discussions with the Nihang Sikh group. After the talks, the individuals came down from the premises in a peaceful manner, allowing the administration to begin recording statements and reviewing the sequence of events. Officials said statements from the gurdwara management would also be taken as part of the inquiry.
The standoff had drawn attention because the group had remained inside the gurdwara while negotiations continued. Security personnel were deployed nearby as a precaution, and authorities focused on de-escalation rather than force. The peaceful outcome was seen as important for maintaining public order and protecting the sanctity of the religious site.
Police inquiry to examine dispute
According to preliminary information, the dispute appears to have started during a langar-related exchange before tensions rose at the gurdwara. Officials are expected to examine what happened between the two sides before the Nihang Sikh group moved to a higher section of the premises. The inquiry will likely focus on witness statements, local accounts and the actions taken by those involved.
The incident followed wider tension linked to an earlier clash involving Nihangs in Karnaprayag, Chamoli district. Some reports said the group had demanded the release of fellow Nihangs arrested after that clash, which was connected to a local dispute. Authorities did not report any major violence during the final phase of the standoff, and the administration’s priority remained a negotiated settlement.
The resolution has helped restore normalcy in the area, though officials are expected to continue their inquiry before deciding on further action. Community leaders and local authorities are likely to remain engaged to prevent fresh tensions and ensure that religious spaces are not drawn into prolonged confrontations.
