President Droupadi Murmu appointed Dinesh Sharma as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Announced in New Delhi through a late-night communique, the appointment takes effect when Sharma assumes office, succeeding Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retired).

President Droupadi Murmu has appointed BJP Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma as the next Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The appointment will take effect from the date Sharma assumes charge, according to an official Press Information Bureau communique. He will succeed retired Admiral D.K. Joshi, who has administered the Union Territory since October 8, 2017.

Following the announcement, Sharma thanked the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP’s central leadership. He described the responsibility as a commitment to the Constitution, the nation and public service.

Rashtrapati Bhavan announced Sharma’s appointment in a communique issued late on Saturday. The notification specifies that his tenure will begin when he formally assumes charge rather than on the date of the announcement.

The swearing-in and handover schedule had not been detailed in the initial communique. Until the transition is completed, the existing administration will continue to handle the Union Territory’s official responsibilities.

Sharma said he would perform his new duty with devotion, honesty and dedication. He also thanked senior political leaders, supporters, friends and citizens for their wishes following the announcement.

Sharma will replace Admiral D.K. Joshi, a former Chief of the Naval Staff who became Lieutenant Governor on October 8, 2017. The official Andaman and Nicobar administration profile also identifies Joshi as vice-chairman of the Islands Development Agency.

Joshi’s experience in maritime security was particularly relevant to the strategically located island territory. His tenure covered infrastructure expansion, connectivity projects, tourism development and increased national attention on the islands’ security importance.

The transition to Sharma brings a senior political administrator to the post after nearly nine years of leadership by a retired naval officer.

Dinesh Sharma, 62, served as Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2017 to 2022. He has also served as Mayor of Lucknow and held organisational responsibilities within the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Sharma later entered the Rajya Sabha as a BJP representative from Uttar Pradesh. His experience in state administration, urban governance, party organisation and parliamentary affairs is expected to shape his approach to the new assignment.

His appointment requires a transition from active parliamentary politics to the constitutional and administrative responsibilities of a Lieutenant Governor. The post places him at the head of the Union Territory’s administration and makes him an important link between the islands and the central government.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands occupy a crucial position near major maritime routes in the Bay of Bengal and the eastern Indian Ocean. The administration must balance national security, infrastructure, tourism, environmental protection and the welfare of island communities.

Connectivity remains a significant governance issue because the territory is spread across numerous inhabited and uninhabited islands. Transport, healthcare, education, disaster preparedness and sustainable economic development require close coordination between the local administration and central ministries.

Environmental protection is equally important because the islands contain sensitive ecosystems and protected tribal communities. Development projects must therefore be planned with safeguards for forests, coastal zones and local populations.

Sharma’s immediate priorities are expected to become clearer after he takes the oath and begins reviewing ongoing programmes. His formal assumption of office will complete the transition from D.K. Joshi’s long tenure and open a new phase in the administration of the strategically important Union Territory.
