The Union Cabinet has approved a productivity-linked bonus equivalent to 78 days' wages for more than 11.4 lakh eligible Indian Railways employees. The announcement comes ahead of the festive season, with each eligible employee set to receive a maximum bonus of Rs 17,951.
According to the government, the railway employees bonus 2026 will cover 11,40,770 non-gazetted employees. The total financial outlay for the payment is estimated at approximately Rs 2,009.61 crore.
The productivity-linked bonus is traditionally paid to eligible railway employees ahead of the Durga Puja and Dussehra festivities. It recognises the contribution of railway staff to the functioning of one of the world's largest railway networks while encouraging greater productivity and operational efficiency.
Indian Railways PLB covers loco pilots, station masters and Group C staff
A wide range of railway employees will benefit from the Indian Railways PLB. Eligible categories include track maintainers, loco pilots, train managers, station masters, supervisors, technicians, pointsmen and ministerial staff, along with other Group C employees.
The maximum Rs 17,951 railway bonus will provide additional financial support to eligible employees during the festive period. The final payment is linked to the productivity-linked bonus framework followed by Indian Railways.
The government also highlighted the Railways' performance during the 2025-26 financial year. Indian Railways transported a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight during the year and carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers.
Passenger numbers continued to rise in 2026. In August, Indian Railways carried 67.27 crore passengers, compared with 64.43 crore during August 2025. Suburban services recorded stronger growth, with passenger numbers increasing by 9.02 per cent from 34.89 crore to 38.01 crore.
Railway employees bonus 2026 comes as freight traffic grows
The railway festive bonus announcement also comes at a time when freight operations are recording growth. Indian Railways loaded 137.9 million tonnes of freight in August 2026, up from 130.9 million tonnes in August 2025, representing year-on-year growth of 5.4 per cent.
Demand from major sectors such as coal, iron ore, steel and fertilisers contributed to the increase. Rail freight remains a crucial part of India's transportation network, carrying industrial materials and essential commodities across the country.
Freight revenue also increased by 6.27 per cent in August 2026 compared with the same month last year. The improvement in passenger and freight activity provides the operational backdrop to the latest productivity-linked bonus.
With the Cabinet's approval, more than 11.4 lakh eligible railway employees are set to receive the annual incentive ahead of the festive season, with the maximum payment capped at Rs 17,951.
