Kerala GST revenue rises 27% in October, more than double India’s rate
Kerala GST revenue growth in October 2026 reached 27%, with collections of ₹3,689 crore. Kerala GST collections outpaced the India GST growth rate of 12.8%, while SGST and IGST settlement data showed a sustained rise through the financial year.

Kerala has recorded a significant increase in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue, with collections rising by 27% in October 2026. The state's GST revenue reached ₹3,689 crore, compared with ₹2,913 crore during the same month last year, marking one of its strongest recent performances in tax collection.

The growth is particularly noteworthy as India's overall GST revenue increased by 12.8% during October. Kerala's growth rate was more than double the national average, highlighting the state's improving revenue collection performance.

The increase was primarily reflected in post-settlement revenue, which includes State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) collections and Kerala's allocated share of Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST).

The latest figures suggest that Kerala has maintained positive revenue momentum throughout the current financial year. Improved tax administration and timely collection efforts are being seen as important contributors to the state's performance.

Economist Professor Mary George, speaking to WION, attributed the increase to the state government's efficient tax collection practices.

She observed that Kerala has achieved substantial revenue growth without major tax increases while continuing to invest in social welfare programmes and infrastructure development.

According to her assessment, the state could be heading towards its strongest revenue growth since the introduction of GST.

Kerala GST collections record strong growth in first six months

Kerala's GST revenue performance during the first half of the 2026–27 financial year also reflects a consistent upward trend.

Between April and September 2026, the state's post-settlement GST revenue increased by 18.8%, reaching ₹19,583 crore compared with ₹16,482 crore during the corresponding period in the previous year.

In comparison, combined GST revenue across Indian states increased by 16%, reaching approximately ₹5.79 lakh crore.

Kerala's own GST collections recorded an even stronger performance relative to the national trend. The state's own tax revenue increased by 13.8% to ₹8,970 crore, while the comparable national growth rate stood at 5.8%.

The figures also place Kerala ahead of several major states in terms of growth in their own GST collections.

Tamil Nadu recorded a 2% decline, West Bengal reported a 1% decrease, and Delhi witnessed a 4% fall during the same period.

These comparisons indicate that Kerala's GST revenue growth has remained relatively strong despite varying collection trends across the country.

The increase in collections is particularly important for Kerala, where government spending requirements include social welfare programmes, public services and infrastructure development.

Higher tax revenue can provide additional financial resources to support these commitments, although overall fiscal stability also depends on expenditure management and other revenue sources.

SGST and IGST settlement trends strengthen Kerala tax revenue

Kerala's September 2026 GST figures had already indicated an improvement in revenue collections before the sharper rise recorded in October.

During September, post-settlement GST revenue increased by 9% to ₹3,451 crore, while the state's own GST collections rose by 8% to ₹1,481 crore.

The acceleration from September's 9% post-settlement growth to October's 27% increase highlights the stronger year-on-year revenue performance recorded in the latest month.

Post-settlement GST revenue is an important indicator of the funds that ultimately accrue to a state after the distribution of applicable GST revenues between the Centre and states.

The steady rise in these collections indicates an improvement in Kerala's revenue position during the current financial year.

However, economists and policymakers will need to monitor whether this momentum continues during the remaining months of 2026–27. Changes in economic activity, tax compliance, consumption patterns and settlement adjustments can influence future GST collections.

For Kerala, sustaining revenue growth without placing additional tax burdens on consumers and businesses remains an important policy consideration.

The October figures nevertheless represent a positive development for the state's finances. With GST revenue increasing by 27% against the national average of 12.8%, Kerala has demonstrated stronger year-on-year collection growth than the country as a whole.

If the upward trend continues, improved GST collections could strengthen the state's ability to finance essential services, welfare commitments and development projects in the coming months.
