TVK Awaits INDIA Bloc Invite As Congress Cites MPs Rule

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, the political party led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has not yet received an invitation to the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled in New Delhi on Monday, June 8, 2026, according to sources. The meeting is being held at the Constitution Club in Delhi, where representatives from 23 Opposition parties are expected to gather for an important round of political discussions. The agenda is likely to focus on rebuilding Opposition unity, reviewing recent Assembly election setbacks, addressing internal disagreements and planning a stronger national strategy against the BJP-led government. However, TVK’s uncertain participation has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the meeting, especially because the party has recently gained major political importance in Tamil Nadu and is now allied with the Congress in the state.

Sources said there is still no final clarity on whether TVK will attend the INDIA bloc meeting. A decision on inviting Vijay’s party may be taken later today. The Congress, which is TVK’s ally in Tamil Nadu, has cited the MPs-only criterion, saying that parties without Members of Parliament are generally not invited to such Opposition bloc meetings. At present, TVK does not have any MPs. This has made its invitation uncertain despite its growing influence in Tamil Nadu politics. The issue is politically sensitive because TVK had reportedly offered its lone vacant Rajya Sabha seat to the Congress after the Assembly election results, a move seen as an effort to strengthen the alliance and cement the partnership between Vijay’s party and the Congress.

The INDIA bloc meeting is expected to be attended by several senior Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge from the Congress, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee from the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav. From the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule is expected to attend the meeting in Delhi. The Uddhav Sena will not attend the meeting in person, though Uddhav Thackeray, Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut are likely to join through video conferencing. The presence of these leaders makes the meeting important for the Opposition’s future coordination, but the absence of the DMK and uncertainty over TVK’s invitation have exposed tensions within the alliance.

The DMK has decided to skip the INDIA bloc meeting after its electoral defeat in Tamil Nadu and after the Congress joined hands with Vijay’s TVK to form a coalition government in the state. The DMK, once a major Congress ally in Tamil Nadu and a key participant in the Opposition bloc, walked out of the alliance after accusing the Congress of betrayal and backstabbing. The party has made it clear that it does not intend to participate in future INDIA bloc meetings. This has created a serious challenge for the Congress, which now has to balance its new partnership with TVK while managing the fallout with its former ally, the DMK.

The political tension has also triggered a sharp exchange between TVK and the BJP. TVK MLA VMS Mustafa from Madurai Central questioned the DMK’s decision to stay away from the INDIA bloc meeting and accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s party of political double standards. He alleged that the DMK had been exposed and claimed that it was acting like a puppet of the RSS. The BJP rejected the allegations, with BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam attacking both TVK and the INDIA bloc. He said the Opposition alliance was shattered, claimed the Congress had been reduced to a regional entity, and described TVK as being at the mercy of the DMK. He also questioned how the INDIA bloc could continue blaming the BJP despite repeated political setbacks.

The developments around the June 8, 2026 INDIA bloc meeting show that the Opposition alliance is facing a major internal test. While the meeting is meant to project unity against the BJP, the uncertainty over TVK’s participation, the DMK’s absence and the Congress’s MPs-only explanation have shifted focus to internal contradictions within the bloc. For Vijay’s TVK, the issue is an early test of national political recognition. For the Congress, it is a difficult balancing act between old allies, new partners and alliance rules. For the INDIA bloc, the bigger challenge is clear: it must manage state-level rivalries and alliance disputes before it can present itself as a united national alternative.
