China appears to unveil J-36 stealth fighter in PLA video

PLA video sparks stealth fighter speculation

China has appeared to offer the first public glimpse of its long-rumoured J-36 sixth-generation stealth fighter after the People’s Liberation Army released a promotional video featuring what defence analysts believe is the advanced aircraft. The brief appearance has triggered widespread discussion about the progress of China’s next-generation military aviation programme, although no official confirmation has been issued by Chinese authorities.

The aircraft was seen for only a few seconds in a video published on Sunday celebrating the Y-20 military transport aircraft. During a conversation between two PLA airmen discussing refuelling operations, one pilot referred to “Xiao Liu” (Little Six), a nickname that analysts believe may point to a classified aircraft project. Moments later, a fast-moving tailless jet with a diamond-shaped wing design appeared outside the cockpit window, matching earlier speculative images linked to the J-36 prototype.

Analysts link footage to J-36 programme

Defence analysts have interpreted the footage as the first indirect public acknowledgement of China’s sixth-generation fighter development. Until now, the aircraft had only been seen in unverified images and online speculation, including alleged test flight material circulating on social media. The Chinese Defence Ministry has not confirmed the identity of the aircraft or provided any official details.

The J-36 is believed to be one of two sixth-generation prototypes under development in China. Analysts suggest that the larger J-36, reportedly associated with AVIC Chengdu, features a tailless diamond-wing configuration designed to enhance stealth and reduce radar visibility. A second aircraft, unofficially referred to as the J-50 and linked to AVIC Shenyang, is thought to have a smaller tailless design with different operational roles.

Global race for next-generation air power

Sixth-generation aircraft are expected to go beyond the capabilities of current fifth-generation fighters such as the US F-35 and China’s J-20. These future platforms are anticipated to feature advanced stealth systems, extended operational range, adaptive engines, and the ability to coordinate with autonomous combat drones in complex battlefield environments.

China’s apparent progress comes amid parallel development efforts by other global powers. The United States Air Force is reportedly preparing to introduce the F-47 by 2028 following classified prototype testing, while the US Navy continues work on the F/A-XX carrier-based program. In Europe, the Future Combat Air System has faced delays, while the Global Combat Air Programme involving the UK, Japan and Italy aims for deployment in the 2030s.

Strategic implications remain uncertain

While the latest video has intensified speculation, analysts caution that the aircraft’s operational status and capabilities remain unverified. The emergence of the footage, however, highlights the accelerating pace of global competition in next-generation air power, where stealth, automation and long-range strike capability are becoming central to future military strategy.
