Canada proof of funds for Indian students must cover tuition, living expenses and travel. Applicants should submit traceable bank records, education-loan documents, sponsor evidence and a clear plan for financing programs lasting more than one year in Canada.
How much money must students show?
Indian applicants must prove they can pay tuition, living expenses and transportation without working in Canada. For applications filed on or after Monday, September 1, 2025, one student studying outside Quebec must show C$22,895 for first-year living expenses, excluding tuition and travel. Quebec uses separate requirements.
This amount applies to international applicants generally, not only Indians. IRCC states that its living-expense requirements are updated periodically.
Bank statements and tuition records
IRCC lists bank statements covering the previous four months as a common form of proof. Students may also submit first-year tuition or housing receipts, but they must still show money for living expenses and transportation.
Applicants should keep complete statements and document significant deposits using records such as fixed-deposit maturity papers, property-sale documents, investment withdrawals or sponsor transfers. Clear supporting evidence helps establish where the money came from.
Loans, scholarships and family sponsors
IRCC recognizes evidence including a bank education loan, guaranteed investment certificate, convertible bank draft and scholarship funding. Scholarship documents should clearly establish the amount and availability of the support.
The New Delhi visa-office checklist asks applicants receiving financial assistance to provide a reference letter explaining the funding plan, relationship to the sponsor, sponsor’s occupation, contact details and number of dependents. It also requests income-tax returns for the applicant and parents for the previous two years, along with employment evidence where applicable.
Applicants using education loans should include the sanction letter and records connecting any disbursement or tuition payment to the declared source.
Plan for the full program
Applicants must show sufficient resources for their first academic year. For programs lasting longer than one year, they must also explain how they intend to finance the remaining period.
A well-prepared application should connect each source of money to verifiable records and present a realistic study budget. Students should check current IRCC guidance and the latest New Delhi visa-office checklist before filing because additional documents may apply to their circumstances.
