Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump said he had held extensive discussions with Zelensky and several Western leaders, including those from Britain, France, Germany, and NATO. He characterized the talks as productive and detailed, suggesting that sustained diplomatic engagement had narrowed differences that have long stalled a negotiated settlement. Trump said the discussions reflected a shared urgency among allies to end the war that began in 2022 with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
As diplomatic momentum built, European leaders meeting in Germany released a joint statement outlining a proposal for a multinational force designed to help enforce a potential peace agreement. The proposal forms part of what officials described as robust, US-backed security guarantees aimed at preventing future violations by Russia. Zelensky, who has remained cautious throughout the negotiations, acknowledged that the talks with US envoys were demanding but ultimately constructive. After meeting for a second day with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, Zelensky said the discussions involved complex issues and differing positions, particularly concerning territorial matters. The joint European statement also reaffirmed long-term military support for Ukraine, stating that the country’s armed forces should maintain a peacetime strength of approximately 800,000 troops.
