Actor and politician Kamal Haasan has found himself at the center of a heated linguistic controversy after stating that the Kannada language was "born out of Tamil." The remark, made during the audio launch of his upcoming film Thug Life in Chennai, has angered several pro-Kannada groups and political leaders in Karnataka, sparking protests, threats of boycott, and demands for an apology.
While introducing veteran Kannada actor Shivarajkumar at the event, Haasan praised Tamil culture and stated, “Uyire Urave Tamizhe,” translating to “my life and my family is Tamil language.” He then added that Kannada was born out of Tamil, suggesting a shared linguistic ancestry. This comment, though likely made in a spirit of unity, has been perceived by many in Karnataka as disrespectful and historically inaccurate.
Pro-Kannada organisations, especially Kannada Rakshana Vedike, have reacted strongly by tearing down Thug Life posters in Bengaluru. They warned of intensified protests if Haasan did not retract his statement or issue a public apology. Some protesters went as far as threatening to blacken his face and ban his films across Karnataka.
Political backlash was swift. BJP Karnataka state president BY Vijayendra condemned Haasan’s comment, labelling it as “uncultured” and “arrogant.” In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Vijayendra asserted that Kannada has a literary heritage that dates back 2,500 years and stands independently of Tamil. He accused Haasan of being ungrateful to the Kannada film industry, where he has previously worked, and criticized him for frequently making statements that allegedly offend religious or regional sentiments.
The incident has reignited long-standing debates over the origins of South Indian languages, with linguists and cultural historians yet to weigh in on the political ramifications. Meanwhile, calls for boycotting Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Haasan, have intensified. The film is set for a theatrical release on June 5, but its fate in Karnataka now hangs in the balance amid the controversy. As of now, Kamal Haasan has not issued any official response to the backlash. All eyes are on whether he will offer a clarification or risk a wider fallout ahead of his film's release.
