Mumbai Metro Manufacturing Milestone
Andhra Pradesh’s contribution to urban rail manufacturing has gained attention after Alstom built the first Metropolis trainset for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A in 14 months.
The company unveiled the trainset at its Sri City facility on October 14. Alstom described the construction timeframe as a record for the project. The milestone concerns the first trainset, rather than completion of the entire fleet.
While manufacturing took place in Andhra Pradesh, the train was designed in Bengaluru. Propulsion equipment came from Coimbatore, with bogies supplied from Savli in Gujarat, reflecting a production network spanning several states.
Mumbai Metro Driverless Fleet Plans
The order covers 39 six-car trainsets, comprising 234 metro cars. Alstom is supplying the trains and signalling equipment to Larsen & Toubro, which is executing the integrated systems package for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
The project includes communications-based train control designed to support driverless operations, alongside five years of maintenance. Planned passenger features include wheelchair access, airflow-based cooling and bicycle racks.
Manufacturing readiness does not establish that these trains have entered passenger service. Deployment will depend on system integration, testing and the necessary clearances.
Mumbai Metro Boost For Andhra Pradesh
The Sri City milestone highlights Andhra Pradesh’s role in supplying advanced rail equipment for major infrastructure projects. It also demonstrates how domestic factories and engineering centres contribute to metro expansion beyond their home states.
In the supplied article, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh welcomed the development, describing AP-manufactured metro coaches as an example of Indian-built products supporting urban infrastructure.
For Mumbai, the trainsets form part of a wider transport project. For Andhra Pradesh, their production adds visibility to Sri City’s rail manufacturing capabilities and its participation in India’s expanding metro supply chain.
