WASHINGTON – Trump global views are under renewed scrutiny as international polling, US policy debates, Trump poll findings, midterms and the coming UN debate put Washington’s international standing in focus.

Global opinion

President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States commands greater respect abroad under his leadership. However, Pew Research Center’s 2026 international survey presents a more complicated picture.

Pew surveyed 42,151 adults across 36 countries between February 8 and May 13, 2026. A median of 23% said they had confidence in Trump to do the right thing regarding world affairs. The organization also reported declining favorable views of the United States in several countries compared with earlier surveys.

The results do not suggest that every country views Washington in the same way. Public attitudes differ considerably by region, political environment and national interests. Still, the data shows that skepticism toward both Trump and the United States remains substantial across many of the countries surveyed.

US policy

US policy has become a major part of the debate over America’s international image. Trade disputes, military policy, security partnerships and relations with traditional allies have all influenced perceptions of Washington.

Trump’s supporters argue that a tougher approach gives the United States greater negotiating leverage and encourages allies to contribute more toward shared security responsibilities. Critics argue that confrontational diplomacy can weaken trust and make long-term cooperation more difficult.

Pew also found concerns about whether the United States considers the interests of other countries when making foreign-policy decisions, adding another dimension to the debate over American diplomacy and global trust.

Trump poll

Domestic public opinion is also shaping the political environment. An Ipsos survey conducted from September 11 to 14 questioned 1,143 US adults about Trump’s presidency, political figures and the 2026 midterm elections. The survey carried a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for the full sample.

Polling provides a snapshot of voter sentiment at a particular moment. It should not be treated as a prediction of how Americans will vote in November.

Midterms

The next regularly scheduled federal general election will take place on November 3, 2026, according to the Federal Election Commission. All 435 voting seats in the House of Representatives are contested during congressional election years, while roughly one-third of Senate seats are elected under the chamber’s staggered system.

The elections will determine control of Congress for the following two years, making voter attitudes toward the economy, foreign relations and presidential leadership important issues during the campaign.

UN debate

Trump will soon take his foreign-policy message to one of the world’s largest diplomatic gatherings. The 81st United Nations General Assembly general debate will be held in New York from September 22 through September 28, 2026. Heads of state, government leaders and other senior representatives are expected to participate.

The UN debate will give Trump an opportunity to defend his record and his claim that American influence has strengthened. At the same time, recent international polling shows that views of US leadership remain divided, making the gathering an important stage for assessing Washington’s relationships with allies and other governments.
