Chicago Hindu temple mass shooting plot foiled, police say

Chicago Hindu temple mass shooting plot foiled, police say, after authorities arrested a 19-year-old Palatine man accused of sending threatening messages and an alleged manifesto targeting minorities. Police recovered a rifle and ammunition, while Hindu places of worship were alerted as investigators examined the potential target.

Alleged manifesto targeting minorities

Police in suburban Chicago arrested 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis after investigators received information about electronic communications he allegedly sent to a co-worker. Prosecutors say those communications included an eight-page document describing a possible mass shooting and expressing hostility toward Indian, Jewish and African American communities.

Authorities allege the document contained racist and white supremacist language and discussed killing multiple people. Co-workers also told investigators that Paporakis had previously expressed extremist views and made threats against Indians.

Investigators believe a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area may have been considered as a target, but officials have not publicly confirmed a specific temple or established that an attack location had been finalized.

Rifle and ammunition recovered

Palatine and Mount Prospect police arrested Paporakis on October 11. During a search of his residence, investigators said they recovered an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, ammunition and other material relevant to the investigation.

Authorities also reported finding objects containing Nazi-related imagery and a gas canister marked with an anti-South Asian slur. Prosecutors are examining the seized items alongside electronic communications to determine the extent of the alleged plan.

Paporakis faces felony charges including making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. The accusations remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Judge orders suspect held

A judge ordered Paporakis to remain in custody while the criminal case proceeds. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.

Prosecutors allege that the suspected attack may have been planned for the weekend of his arrest. Court information cited by authorities also indicates that he later told a co-worker that his firearm had malfunctioned. Investigators are working to determine whether that claim was connected to an attempted attack.

Hindu places of worship alerted

Aurora police contacted Hindu places of worship in their jurisdiction after learning of the potential threat. Palatine Police Chief William Nord said the seriousness of the alleged threat could not be overstated and emphasized the importance of protecting religious institutions.

The response reflects heightened concern about threats against minority communities and places of worship, particularly when online extremist rhetoric is accompanied by weapons or detailed planning.

Chicago mass shooting investigation

The FBI has joined local agencies in examining the alleged manifesto, electronic messages and recovered evidence. Investigators are also working to determine whether anyone else knew about or assisted with the alleged plan.

For Chicago-area Indian and Hindu communities, the case has renewed concerns about anti-Indian threats and religious security. Authorities have stressed that the investigation remains active and that the exact intended target has not been officially confirmed
