Chris Pappas Becomes First Openly Gay Male US Senator

Chris Pappas Becomes First Openly Gay Male US Senator after defeating Republican John E. Sununu in New Hampshire's November 3, 2026, election. The Democratic congressman's victory marks a historic milestone for LGBTQ representation in Washington while keeping the Senate seat under Democratic control.

Chris Pappas New Hampshire Senate Victory

Democrat Chris Pappas, 46, won New Hampshire's closely watched Senate contest after former Senator John E. Sununu conceded defeat on Tuesday evening. Election projections confirmed Pappas's victory as voters chose a successor to retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen.

Early results showed Pappas leading Sununu by approximately 60% to 37%, with 22% of votes counted. Those figures represented an election-night snapshot rather than the final certified totals.

During his victory speech, Pappas criticised corporate influence, healthcare cuts and the Trump administration's policies. He described the result as a message from voters seeking change in Washington.

John Sununu Concedes Senate Election

Sununu previously represented New Hampshire in the US Senate from 2003 to 2009. He lost his 2008 re-election campaign to Shaheen, who subsequently served three consecutive terms.

Republicans had hoped Sununu's political experience and family connections would help them regain the seat. Although he positioned himself as an independent-minded Republican and criticised some Trump administration decisions, voters chose Pappas.

First Openly Gay Male US Senator

Pappas's election makes him the first openly gay man elected to the United States Senate. His victory represents another milestone in LGBTQ representation at the federal level.

He is not the first openly LGBTQ senator. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin became the first openly gay person elected to the chamber in 2012. Pappas's achievement specifically concerns male representation.

Speaking about his identity during the campaign, Pappas emphasised his pride in New Hampshire's acceptance of people from different backgrounds.

Chris Pappas Political Career

Pappas entered the US House of Representatives in January 2019, representing New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District. He served four terms before winning his Senate campaign.

His congressional work included participation in the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and leadership within the Congressional Equality Caucus. He also supported the Equality Act and measures addressing discrimination against LGBTQ Americans.

However, his voting record has faced scrutiny, including his support for the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, which contained restrictions on certain gender-affirming healthcare coverage for military families.

New Hampshire Senate Election Impact

The result protects an important Democratic Senate seat during the 2026 US midterm elections. Pappas will succeed Jeanne Shaheen when the new Congress begins in January 2027.

The race attracted national attention because both parties were competing for Senate control. New Hampshire's outcome prevented a Republican gain while other congressional contests continued across the country.

Pappas now moves from the House to the Senate, where his election adds a new chapter to the history of LGBTQ representation in American politics.
