Canada Details C$47 Million Pakistan Aid Package
Canada announced more than C$47.2 million in security and development assistance during Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s one-day visit to Islamabad on Monday, July 20, 2026.
The trip was the first by a Canadian foreign minister to Pakistan in almost 20 years and focused on security, trade, investment and development cooperation. Security Cooperation Receives C$2.2 Million
More than C$2.2 million will support projects involving INTERPOL, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation.
The programs will focus on border management, counterterrorism, financial crime investigations and transnational organized crime. Canada said the assistance builds on a decade of security cooperation with Pakistan.
Development Projects Receive C$45 Million
Canada also committed C$45 million to three development initiatives.
The funding includes C$10 million to restore education access for children affected by floods, C$15 million for climate resilience programs and C$20 million to expand reproductive health and family planning services.
Canada-Pakistan Trade and Investment Talks Advance
Anand met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
Canada and Pakistan agreed to accelerate negotiations on a foreign investment protection agreement after holding a second round of negotiations in Canada in June 2026. The countries also agreed to revive their joint working group on trade and investment. Clean Energy and Agricultural Cooperation
The two governments signed a protocol establishing predictable import conditions for Canadian canola.
They also agreed to encourage investment in solar, wind and battery storage, citing JCM Power’s planned 240-megawatt Dhabeji hybrid wind-solar project with K-Electric. Indus Waters Treaty Raised During Visit
Dar asked Canada to support the restoration of the Indus Waters Treaty, the water-sharing agreement between India and Pakistan, according to Dawn. The discussions also covered regional security, terrorism, mining and critical minerals. visit established a framework for continued high-level engagement, including annual reviews of bilateral progress. The next measure of success will be whether the two governments complete the investment agreement and convert the announced trade, energy, development and security commitments into operating projects.
