US B1/B2 visa renewal from India remains available, but Dropbox eligibility is limited to qualifying applicants whose prior full-validity visa expired within 12 months. Applicants must still submit a new DS-160, pay the $185 fee and may be called for an interview.
Indian travelers can still apply for a US B1/B2 visa after an earlier visa expires, but “renewal” does not extend the old visa automatically. The State Department uses the same application process for first-time and repeat applicants; only some renewal applicants may avoid an in-person interview.
Dropbox eligibility is limited to 12 months
Under rules effective Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a B1/B2 applicant may qualify for an interview waiver when the previous visa expired within 12 months, was issued for full validity and was issued when the applicant was at least 18.
The applicant must apply in the country of nationality or usual residence, must not have an unresolved visa refusal and must have no apparent or potential ineligibility.
For Indian nationals, the reciprocity schedule lists B1/B2 visas as multiple-entry visas valid for up to 120 months. Even when Dropbox criteria are met, a consular officer may require an interview.
DS-160, fee and documents
Applicants must complete a new DS-160, follow the official appointment process and pay the non-refundable $185 visitor-visa application fee. The State Department’s India reciprocity schedule lists no separate B1/B2 issuance fee.
Core documents include a passport valid for the required period, the DS-160 confirmation page, the fee receipt and a compliant photograph if the online upload fails.
Additional evidence may be requested to show the trip’s purpose, the applicant’s intention to leave the United States and the ability to pay travel costs. Employment or family ties may support the case, but an invitation letter is not required.
Interview waits vary across India
The State Department’s table, last updated Tuesday, July 21, 2026, showed average B1/B2 interview waits of seven months in Chennai, 10 months in Hyderabad, two months in Kolkata, 11 months in Mumbai and eight months in New Delhi.
These are interview-wait estimates, not guaranteed visa-processing times. New appointments may be released, and interview-waiver submission times are not included in the table.
Approval is never automatic
A previous visa does not guarantee that another visa will be issued. Applicants may be called for an interview or placed in administrative processing, while inaccurate or incomplete information can damage the application.
Travelers should apply early, follow current official instructions and avoid purchasing non-refundable tickets until the visa has been issued.
