UK Visa 2027: What Indian Workers and Students Should Know

UK visa changes 2027 for Indians could affect students, graduates and sponsored professionals. The UK Budget announced revised Skilled Worker salary thresholds, expanded HPI eligibility and longer post-study stays for selected graduates. Some highly skilled workers may also receive more time to find jobs.

UK visa changes 2027 for Indians could reshape employment and post-study opportunities for professionals and international students planning to move to Britain. The reforms, announced in the UK Budget on October 28, 2026, include revised salary requirements, changes to Graduate visas and expanded opportunities for highly qualified graduates.

The measures generally apply to eligible international applicants regardless of nationality, but could affect Indian workers and students considering UK employment or education.

UK Graduate visa rules for Indian students

From January 1, 2027, most non-doctoral graduates applying for the Graduate visa will receive 18 months of permission instead of two years.

The government has also announced plans to retain a two-year duration for graduates of universities with strong immigration compliance and employment outcomes. However, the qualifying institutions and full eligibility criteria have not been announced.

Students completing doctoral qualifications will continue to qualify for three years under existing rules.

UK Skilled Worker visa salary changes in 2027

From spring 2027, occupation-specific minimum salaries for Skilled Worker visas will move from median earnings to the 25th percentile of wages.

The general salary threshold will also be updated using 2026 earnings data. Employers and applicants must still satisfy the applicable salary requirements.

The government also plans to combine several salary concessions into one new-entrant discount and remove the separate PhD discount. Final figures remain pending.

HPI visa opportunities for Indian graduates

The High Potential Individual visa will expand to graduates with eligible qualifications from the world's top 150 universities.

This route allows qualifying graduates of overseas institutions to seek employment in the UK without securing employer sponsorship beforehand.

Indian graduates could benefit if their universities meet the relevant eligibility requirements. The expanded university criteria and revised application cap have yet to be finalized.

More time for highly skilled workers after job loss

Certain highly skilled sponsored workers whose employment ends could receive up to six months to find another qualifying job.

The proposed period will depend on previous employment conditions and is expected to be introduced during 2027.

For Indian applicants, the practical impact will depend on the visa route, application date, salary eligibility and university qualification. Further Home Office guidance will determine how the announced measures operate alongside existing immigration rules.
